About the Role

To support the Company Design strategy by designing and developing ranges in line with current trend, customer profiles, and brand direction. To ensure delivery of departmental objectives, working closely with Buyer / Senior Buyer / Head of Design.

Responsibilities

  • To create and develop outstanding new product designs with our New Look customers front of mind
  • To work closely with the buying team, taking responsibility for the range adding new product and updates of best sellers, being involved in range build meetings and brainstorming new product trends and the new design themes on a weekly/monthly basis where appropriate
  • To interpret, design and develop new commercial trends quickly for our New Look customers ensuring we deliver trend in line with competitors – act with pace
  • Design in line with the critical path ensuring new product is designed in time for range sign offs/strategy meetings
  • Analyse and report on Catwalk shows – highlighting key trends with the New Look Brands customer in mind and interpreting trend in line with New Look product handwriting and brand strategy.
  • To research trends using trend websites, ecommerce sites – including international retail, fashion and lifestyle blogs and social networking sites. Give direction to business and to buying teams on trend and new product opportunities.
  • To contribute ideas in design team discussions and to input into the design themes for each range period
  • Researching lifestyle trends and blogs to make sure we are constantly focused on our customer’s product needs
  • Working with Colour and Fabric to implement colour direction, colour palette, and research into fabric trends and innovations for the season. This will include research in overseas markets and visiting trade shows
  • Providing input into the product design strategy for the department (s)
  • Participating in factory briefings with the buyer updating designs when appropriate and ensuring the New Look product handwriting is followed and executed correctly – this will involve Far East/ India travel when appropriate
  • Regular comp shopping / directional shopping / inspiration trips both UK and international – buying samples and compiling shop reports
  • Sharing of information where relevant on product, suppliers, best/worst sellers etc. within business area and across business area
  • Communicate effectively with all internal and external teams
  • Working with QA in fit sessions in order to develop block and fit that reflect design direction, customer trends and fit specific requirements for the New Look Brands customer.
  • Supports with the development of fellow colleagues, delivering relevant training and support when required
  • Understanding of the New look customer, the New Look Brands customer and company strategy
  • Knowledge of the concepts of the New Look brand and vision
  • Practical understanding of the production capabilities of the supply base
  • Knowledge of fabric sourcing and ability to use this to its full potential

Experience & Skills

  • Skilled in visualising design concepts by hand and PC/MAC
  • Time manage work load according to the critical path
  • An in-depth knowledge of the current competitive and inspirational market place
  • Good interpersonal / communication skills
  • Ability to initiate and build strong relationships with Design, Buying, Merchandising and QA
  • Good influencing skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Presentation Skills
  • Previous experience in a similar role with a major retailer
  • Fashion Design Qualification
